Student leadership is encouraged at all year levels, as students are taught and expected to make decisions based on Gospel values, demonstrate personal responsibility and show care and respect for others. Our senior students also have opportunities to participate in formal leadership roles, which include the following:
Our School
Student Leadership
Our Year 5 and 6 students have opportunities to develop their leadership skills in a supportive environment.
Senior Badge
Year 5 and 6 students are encouraged to work towards earning leadership badges that reflect the school values of Faith, Kindness and Respect. Throughout the year, students demonstrate these values through a range of actions at school and in the wider community, earning credits for their efforts. Each badge includes compulsory actions that must be completed, along with additional actions that students can nominate themselves or others for, with teacher approval. When a student earns 10 or more credits in a category, they may be nominated by their classroom teacher to receive the badge. The program supports the development of leadership skills and values but is not compulsory and is not required for Year 6 leadership nominations.
School Captains
School Captains are senior student leaders who represent the voice, values, and vision of the school community. Guided by the example of Mary MacKillop and her words,
Never see a need without doing something about it,
they lead with integrity, compassion, and a strong commitment to service.
They model exemplary behaviour, demonstrate pride in their school, and actively promote a positive and inclusive culture. School Captains take on key responsibilities such as leading assemblies, supporting whole-school events, and working alongside staff and student leaders to strengthen community connections. They also proudly represent the school at important community events such as Anzac Day and the Miners Memorial, demonstrating respect, leadership, and community spirit.
Through their leadership, School Captains inspire others to act with kindness, take initiative, and make a meaningful difference within the school community.
Spirit Captains
A School Spirit Captain plays an important role in building a positive, inclusive, and faith-filled school culture. Inspired by the words of Mary MacKillop
Never see a need without doing something about it,
they lead with compassion, initiative, and service to others.
They encourage school pride and participation in events, including community service opportunities, while also being attentive to the needs of their peers, stepping forward to support, include, and uplift others. Through their actions, they model kindness, leadership, and a willingness to make a difference, helping to create a strong sense of community where everyone feels valued and connected.
House Captains
House Captains play a vital role in fostering school spirit, teamwork, and a strong sense of belonging within their house. Supported by the Physical Education team, they lead with initiative, service, and care for others.
They encourage participation in house events such as carnivals and competitions, motivate students to give their best, and model positive behaviour at all times.
House Captains also take an active role in promoting healthy lifestyles by facilitating morning fitness routines and ensuring sports equipment is organised, cared for, and ready for use.
Through supporting younger students, promoting inclusivity, and working alongside staff and student leaders, they help build a positive, connected, and spirited school community where everyone feels encouraged to contribute and belong.
Student Ministries
All Year 5 and 6 students are able to nominate to participate in one of our ministry groups. Ministries meet at lunchtime once a week with a teacher and plan activities related to the focus of each group:
- Environmental Ministry – Assists in running our various recycling programs, as well as taking part in caring for our chickens and worm farm.
- Public Relations Ministry – Assists in running our assemblies, including setting up equipment and following the assembly script.
- Friendology Ministry – Assists in determining ways the school promotes kindness and gratitude towards each other, following the example of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The Friendology ministry promotes our school URStrong program, supporting the social development and engagement of our students.
- Sports Ministry – Assists the House Captains and PE teacher in setting up and running various sporting activities.
